Our story

We found love adventuring the world together…

And now we want to celebrate our greatest adventure yet with you.

Our story began in the Bay Area in 2024, where we quickly bonded over our mutual love for travel, adventure, and endless yapping… falling in love somewhere between the trees of Redwood National Park, cliffs of Yosemite, banks of Lake Tahoe, vineyards of Napa, snowy hikes of Wrights Lake, sunsets of Cabo, bright lights of Las Vegas, and parks of Mexico City. Little did we know our adventure was just beginning…

In July 2025, we (Holland included) boarded a flight to Northern Italy, where Megan would begin a 2-year assignment as the Director of Operations, Civil Engineering at Aviano Air Base. The plan was to schedule one round trip at a time, banking on Amy’s ability to sleep on long-haul flights and her work remaining fully remote. The rural-Italy learning curve was steep — but a few allergic reactions, language barriers, and housing mishaps later, Northern Italy began to feel like home, and our little family was taking shape before our eyes.

Within our first year, we defeated Italian bureaucracy and secured a coveted Digital Nomad Visa for Amy, allowing her to come and go easily. We also traveled… A LOT. Our fridge magnet collection proudly displaying our European conquests across Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, UK, Spain, and Switzerland, highlighted by the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. Through most of our travels, we caught ourselves constantly routing to alpine lakes: Bled, Como, Barcis, Misurina, and dozens more we can’t pronounce. It was no surprise (ok maybe a litttle) when Megan popped the question on the water surrounded by the mountains of Lake Garda in May 2026. It was only fitting that Amy play an uno reverse card, reciprocating the question in the Dolomites, surrounded by the emerald green waters of Lake Braies.

Italian mountain lakes hold a special place in our hearts and story, as do you—we can’t imagine celebrating our next chapter anywhere else with with the people who helped us get here.

Next up on our adventure list: celebrating with you!

See you at Lake Maggiore!

Bonus content: there's two sides to every story, here both versions of how we came to be.

Travel

Getting to Lake Maggiore

If traveling from the US, we recommend flying into Milan, then it's a scenic drive to Villa Porta in Luino, on the lake's eastern shore.

Milan Malpensa (MXP)

~1h 15m to Villa Porta · best US connections

Milan Linate (LIN)

~1h 30m to Villa Porta · mostly European routes
  • Lugano Airport (Switzerland) or Milan Bergamo (BGY) are smaller alternatives
  • Luino has its own station, with regional service (bus or train) to Milan and Lugano
  • Book flights by 1 March 2027 for the best fares

Complimentary Guest Concierge

Villa Porta’s guest concierge is available to help you with logistics, including accommodations and ground transportation. We recommend pre-booking transportation (if not renting a car), rideshare is less common in Italy.

Things to do

Make a trip of it

A few of our favorite ways to spend time here — whether you're staying at Lake Maggiore or want to see a little more of Europe.

On Lake Maggiore

A boat on Lake Maggiore near Villa Porta

Boat day

Rent a boat and explore the Borromean Islands or quiet corners of the lake. Speaker, suit, snacks, and you can’t go wrong. Highly recommend!

Hands rolling fresh pasta dough

Wine & dine

A pasta-making class, an aperitivo hour (order a Hugo Spritz!), local winery — there’s more good food and wine than seems imaginable.

Colorful lakeside village houses on Lake Maggiore

Village strolls

Luino is well known for its Wednesday market. Cannobio has pastel-colored houses and cobblestone streets, while Isola dei Pescatori is a tiny, romantic fishing island with permanent residents and quaint cobblestone alleys.

Holland looking out at Shaka Beach on Lake Maggiore

Shaka Beach

23 minutes north of Villa Porta, across the Swiss border — a fun, casual beach area with dreamy lake & mountain views, a water swing, and tasty drinks at a beach shack.

A ferry passing Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore

Explore the lake

Ferries connect Maggiore's towns and islands — an easy, fun way to see more of the lake without a car. Luino has a ferry terminal.

Holland’s further out faves

Lake Como, Italy

Lake Lugano or Lake Como

Lugano: ~1–1.5 hours east, sitting across the eastern Swiss border in some parts. The smaller, middle sibling of Maggiore and Como. Great for boating, swimming, and relaxing.

Como: ~1.5 hours east — iconic lake known for its luxurious views, residents, and shops. Can get busy during peak season, but iconic for a reason.

Holland looking out over Lake Garda from the bow of a boat

Lake Garda

The initial proposal spot — ~3 hours east, huge, beautiful alpine lake. A more laidback Lake Como vibe with fewer crowds. Rent a boat, bikes, walk the shops, eat beside Castello Scaligero.

Holland at Interlaken, Switzerland

Interlaken | Switzerland

~3.3 hours away — breathing blue waters you won’t find anywhere else; quiet and relaxed. Consider visiting Grindelwald and take the gondola to the “top of Europe,” where you can walk, hike, eat, or ride the mountain coaster down!

The Italian Dolomites

Italian Dolomites

Further out, but unforgettable. We can’t get enough. A must-do if you have always wanted to hike the Italian Alps, via ferrata, bike Sellaronda, or relax at a mountain spa.

A gondola in Venice, Italy

Venice

~3.5–4 hours — one of the world’s most iconic cities, catch it before it sinks! Pro tip: wake up early (thanks, Holland) and explore the city at sunrise before the crowds and heat hit.

Tips & Tricks

Navigating Italy

A few things we wish someone had told us before we moved here.

What to pack

  • Layers for warm days and cooler lake evenings
  • Light rain jacket – afternoon showers are common
  • Swimsuit
  • Universal or Type L/F adapter
  • YOUR PASSPORT!

Getting around

  • Trains between Milan and the lake are easy and scenic
  • Taxis and private transfers are the norm for the last stretch; Uber & Lyft are not always available. WhatsApp is how locals book drivers
  • Keep some cash on hand — not every small cafe or boat takes cards, but most do
  • Tipping isn’t common here, and sales tax isn’t a thing — what you see is what you pay
  • Renting a car? Go small. Narrow lanes and tight parking make a smaller car much easier here

Before you fly

  • Check your passport — it needs 3+ months of validity from arrival date. Don’t wait to renew!
  • Italy runs on Central European Time (+9 from SF, +6 from DC)
  • An eSIM is the easiest way to use your phone here and avoid daily fees. We like Vodafone, Roamless, or Airalo
  • Italian currency is the euro, but cards are widely accepted nearly everywhere
FAQ

Quick questions

If yours isn't here, just reach out to us!

Milan is your best bet — either Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN), both roughly an hour to an hour and a half from Villa Porta. Lugano Airport in Switzerland is also worth checking, depending on your starting point.

By rental car, taxi, or private transfer. Uber exists at major airports, but is less reliable than in the US. We'll provide transportation to and from Villa Porta for all wedding events from the Luino hotels — see Stay for more details.

Casual lakeside attire for the welcome dinner. For the wedding: navy or black suits for men, long dresses in any color for women. See The Weekend for details on each event.

Yes — to and from Villa Porta for all three wedding events, departing from the Luino hotels. Our guest concierge is happy to help you coordinate other personal transportation you may need.

Parking is limited, but will be available at the venue on the wedding day.

As much as we love your little ones and would love to celebrate with them, Villa Porta's venue means we're unfortunately not able to accommodate children at any of the weekend's events.

Let us know when you RSVP, and Villa Porta's kitchen will take good care of you.
